Chapter Fourteen

Garden of Pain

Blot out the moon. Pull down the stars. Love in the dark, for we’re for the dark.

I had been going to the library every day for a week now. It had instantly become my favorite place in the castle, second only to the kitchen of course. Mrs. Moss made a mean pot roast.

There were so many genres to pick from that at first I couldn’t choose, but after a while, I went to my all-time favorite, a good old-fashioned romance. I would sit for hours by the window on one of the plush seats with a throw and a mug of Mrs. Moss's famous hot cocoa and let myself become engrossed in the characters of my chosen book.

So that was where Colton found me on my sixth evening in the library. Leaning on a pile of pillows, with my throw wrapped around my legs and my nose deep inside a romance novel.

“I didn’t take you for the sappy love story type.” said his deep timbre from behind me.

I jumped a little in my seat, having not heard anyone enter.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you,” Colton said when I looked up into his handsome face.

He was wearing a white V-neck t-shirt with a pair of dark blue jeans. His shirt stretched across his chest and hugged all of his impressive muscles. He looked good in it. It highlighted his tanned skin and I couldn’t help but lick my lips a little with the thought of rubbing my hands up and down his broad chest.

“See anything you like?” he asked with a chuckle, bringing me out of my daydream.

“Oh Yeah...Umm…what?” I asked, looking up at his smiling face. “Oh, I uh, I like sappy love stories. They're predictable, I know, but I’m a sappy love story kind of girl,” I replied, trying to recover from the embarrassing ogling I’d just done.

“Are you enjoying the library?” He asked pushing his hands in his front pockets.

“Yes, your brother was very nice to show it to me. I love to read. But, of course, you already knew that.” I said standing up in front of him.

“And did he show you to our room of chronicles?” Colton asked ignoring my last statement. He pointed to a set of double doors behind us that I had yet to open and explore behind.

“No, I don’t believe he did.”

“Well, allow me to show you what is inside.” He walked over and pushed both doors open for me to walk through.

As soon as I walked in the overhead lights came on and I was surrounded by a bunch of very old books. I could tell because they smelled old, and I loved it.

The room smelled like years of knowledge. I was in awe as I walked around. All the books were large and looked heavy. Each one had a distinctive color with gold as a trim.

In the middle of the room stood a book on a pedestal that had light shining down on it, showcasing its beauty.
